Giant Humboldt Squid Collecting for blood and stomach samples, Santa Rosilla, Baja California, Mexico
In collaboration with Stanford University Marine Biology Professor Dr. William Gilly and Mexican researchers, Oceans Aloft supports the collection of blood from the Humboldt Squid Dosidicus gigas. These squid have been found to tolerate low oxygen environments and thought to have unique oxygen affinity properties within the hemoglobin. Dozens of squid were sampled and drained of their blood to learn more about this fascinating creatures biology.
